THE TRAVELOGUE
As a story oriented person, I’ve learnt a lot from reading people’s travel experiences. It’s what motivates me.
Regardless of the path each of us choose, we eventually have stories worth sharing.

The first time I visited Lagos I was paranoid. I boarded a danfo in the fiery city at Ojota transiting to my destination – Yaba and I clutched my bags tightly to my chest.
I heard stories of people that were robbed in these buses and they made me really scared but after some trips, I adapted to the whole process.

ROAD TRIPPING
My journey commenced on a Wednesday in the historic city of Osogbo. I got to the bus park by 3:00pm and we moved at exactly 3:15pm. The voyage lasted for 3 hours, it was a calm and exciting one.
We arrived Ojota 6:15pm and I compared the beautiful chaotic city to the infamous cradle of yoruba culture, unlike Lagos, Osogbo for me was quite confusing, it wasn’t easy to locate places.
My friend, Susan was supposed to pick me from the park at Ojota but she was busy and couldn’t make it. On the realisation that I was going to commute to Yaba all by myself, I became fidgety.
I mean, this is Lagos!
DANFO
All through my first danfo trip, I was captivated by architecture and landscape of the metropolis, Lagos is a populous state.

At Idiroko, I saw the Maryland Mall, it is a “big black box” and is hard to miss.

ShepherdHill Baptist Church (Santuary of Grace and Glory) is another edifice that caught my attention. It is a grand place of worship and is situated at Obanikoro Bus Stop, Along Ikorodu Road.
Danfo (noun): A name given to a commercial bus popular for the nuisance “wahala” they cause on Lagos roads.
As my first danfo experience slowly came to an end, I silently wished for other passengers alighting at my stop, I knew drivers could be abusive and not that I was scared of insults or anything, I just didn’t want any confrontation on that day.
A couple minutes after wrestling with my inner thoughts, I signaled to the driver that I would be “dropping” at Yaba market and no I didn’t say “owa.”
Sincerely, I didn’t have to be fearful because danfos’ are not that dangerous.

OKADA
I thought motorcyclists in Osogbo were reckless until Lagos gave me a new perspective, “people are learning work in Osogbo.”
Riders here are death-defying, I hoped my ride to Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) would end real fast. The College is Nigeria’s first higher educational institition and it was founded in 1947.

Fun Fact: YABATECH (student enrollment – 16,000) has eight schools and thirty-four academic departments with a total of sixty-four accredited programmes across different levels.
Bikes are quite expensive in the Mega-city.
KEKE NAPEP
Remember my friend, Susan. Well, we met at YABATECH and after exchanging hugs and pleasantries, we got in a Keke Napep to Zenith Bank where our Uber was waiting.
We booked the Uber online and could have arrived earlier if not for little traffic. On top of that, the traffic controller (no lights) stopped motorists on our lane but he later gave us free passage.

Funny thing is the man did because a passenger said she was hungry. The lady in question entertained us with a kidnapper ordeal where one agbero rescued her. She was young and hilarious, the interesting story will be discussed in another post (read now!)

WHERE I STAYED
We hired an Uber to take us to Ikeja, the capital city of Lagos. Along the way, we encountered a gridlock for about 20 minutes before arriving at our stop, Lagos Travel Inn at 41 Toyin Street, Allen.
I didn’t lodge at Travel Inn, it was only a rendezvous point. I would have loved to because the interior was cosy but accommodation fees were a little over my budget. I went to a cheaper hotel, Class Suites at 3 Anu Oluwapo Close, Off Agbaoku Street, Ikeja.
Travel Inn was really fine, rooms for 2 guests cost 27,000 Naira with complementary breakfast and free WiFi, I wish I remembered to take pictures at the hotel. Class Suites on the other hand was significantly cheaper, it’s where I passed the night.
I remained at Ikeja for three days before moving to Oworoshoki on a Friday. Unlike Ikeja where there was a good mix of hotels, restaurants, clubs and other places of interest, “Oworo” was laidback, it’s mostly residential (shoutout to Oduduwa street).
ONIRU PRIVATE BEACH
Did You Know that visiting the beach is a great way to relax.
Fun Fact: There are more than 20 beaches on Lagos Island, the coastal city is truly a wonder of nature.
Oniru Private Beach is a resort situated at Victoria Island in Lagos state, Nigeria.
The sandy shoreline is owned by great Oniru Royal Family, it opens everyday of the week with Sunday having the most visitors.
I’m happy I could strike visiting a popular Lagos Beach off my checklist. The experience was totally worth it!
*Oniru Private Beach will be discussed in a preceding post. Don’t miss out!
There’ll also be a PART II of this series soon.
