Spruced Up

In September of 2020, my high school buddy, Yode reached out to me on my personal Twitter account to inquire about exciting places to paintball in Nigeria’s economic capital and most populous city – Lagos. And being the ever adventurous and “paintballee” kinda guy, I was really pleased just to contribute to his action-packed break.

After going back-and-forth on a few exceptional locations for paintballing in Nigeria’s cradle of hustle and bustle, Yode chose to settle for an arena called Ziggies or better known as, Nigeria Ultimate Paintball Arena perched at Ziggies Compound, Plot 84/86, Basheer Shittu Street, Magodo Phase 2, Shangisha, Lagos.

He assured me that he had a somewhat great time at the arena and in an attempt to make it easier for thrill seekers living in Lagos to enjoy paintballing as well, Yode agreed to partake in a quick explanatory chat with me.

What follows is our one-on-one conversation.

Enjoy! And I hope this cures your enthusiastic spirit in someway…

1. How did you get there?

My cousin just came from the United States of America, so we drove there. We were looking for things to do.

2. Was it easy to locate?

Yes, it was. Thank God for Google Maps, it directed us all the way from the island. But when you get to the gate you don’t exactly know you’re there so we had to ask.

3. Were the staff open and ready at the time of your arrival? Number of bullets? Duration of game?

Yeah, they were. Right from the gate, the guard was courteous and directed us. Every other staff too was well mannered.

There were fifty bullets, then you pay *1,000 Naira if you want more. The games last until one side successfully captures the other team’s flag.

4. Are there side attractions?

Yesssss. There was a bar, a pool and best of all, a football turf.

5. How much for a round? And personal or groups?

*4,000 Naira per person which I thought was a lot, and I felt they could’ve had group discounts.

6. Any discounts?

There was no discount, at least not that I know of.

7. Is there music?

There was a bar around, that was the source.

8. What’s the arena made of? Sand, mud, grass?

Grass. Lots of mud cos of rain in recent days, and which if I had known about I wouldn’t have worn white sneakers! 😭

9. What are the barricades made of? Tires, bamboo, trees?

Barricades weren’t all around first of all and secondly, it was just a net held up by iron bars. It was sufficient tho as no one outside got hit.

10. Is there a safety tutorial before beginning?

Yeah, there was. Didn’t think it was necessary but I understood why it had to be done.

11. Any idea what happens in case there’s an accident?

I don’t. But with how everything was set up, the idea was to make sure it doesn’t.

12. Are the gears clean?

Yeah, we got new overalls but considering the fact that there’s a Coronavirus going around the guns should’ve been cleaned too.

13. Will you like to return?

Most definitely.

14. Advise to visitors?

Go have fun but don’t wear white sneakers and have a good team.

15. Any fun or interesting thing that happened during your game?

It was built to be fun and it was. Any spicy and dangerous bits will make it even more fun.

16. Any Covid protocols?

If there’s anything I’m disappointed about, it’s this cos apart from the guns being one somebody else used, the masks (headwears) we used for the game weren’t fresh.
