Jumoke Munu (The Jumoke Smiley) is the real definition of a travel junkie and she’s currently the Founder and Lead Advisor at The Smiley’s Place Travels.

Established in October of 2019, her travel agency is focused on providing clients with fantastic vacation options. And services include, flight and hotel bookings, luxury cruises, company retreats, romantic getaways and private and group tours to mention a few.

Earlier this year, I had a chat with Jumoke about her travel interests, goals and content strategies.

For clarification, ‘content’ in this article should be perceived as Instagram images, stories, highlights, captions or videos.

So, without further ado.

Here’s The Jumoke Smiley…

#1. Why do you travel?

I travel because I enjoy exploring new places, I enjoy learning new culture and I’m a lover of history.

#2. What inspired you to become a travel content creator?

I became a travel content creator because I believe that there’s a need for me to share what I know about certain destinations.

#3. For how long have you been creating travel content?

I started officially in January 2019.

#4. How would you describe your style of travel and content?

I’ll describe my travel style as budget travelling because I’m really a definition of a Nigerian youth who wants to visit loads of places on a modest bank account. As for my travel content, I create content that makes travel easy and safe for travel enthusiasts, most especially those who like to plan trips themselves.

#5. “Here are my top five hacks for travelling”

• Use an Offine map.

• Write out important contacts.

• Learn how to at least say hi/greet in the local language of wherever you’re visiting.

• Be friendly with the locals.

• Travel insurance is key.

#6. What was your very first travel destination that you produced some content for?

That has to be Nike Art Gallery, I created a vlog and an instagram post for it.

#7. When travelling, do you post everyday or compile your content and post it after you have travelled there?

I post on my insta stories almost immediately and I compile and post on other mediums later.

#8. What do you look for in a travel photo or video for your own content?

I look out for something totally unique, like a destination that people haven’t see pictures of.

#9. When you land in a new destination for the first time, what’s your thought process?

I observe the whole environment closely and create a mental story of my expectations in reality. I also make sure I’m at alert at all times.

#10. If you could travel with anyone in the world who would it be and why?

My friends (the adventure seekers) because our trip’s going to be super awesome and unforgettable. They are a vibe and more!

#11. What’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt about yourself since you started traveling?

I didn’t know I was super adventurous until I started travelling. I mean, I thought I would be scared of some kind of trips but I’m encouraging people to go on adventures right now.

#12. Briefly describe what you use your different social channels for and what is your dominant channel for you personally.

I tell my travel story majorly on my YouTube channel. On my Instagram, I share useful travel tips. And I share links to my Instagram and YouTube posts on my Facebook and I also reach out to friends and family over there.

My dominant channel for me is Instagram!

#13. What is the craziest thing you’ve done for travel or brand partnership stories?

I have not done anything crazy yet.

#14. What is a little travel secret you have not openly told before!?

Well, I act cool on super scary adventures at times and no one notices even when I feel like my soul’s about to fly out!

#15. Do you have any little hidden gems or local secrets that you have discovered about certain places you have been to?

I haven’t figured out just yet.

#16. As a travel advisor, what would you say are the challenges facing Nigeria travel and tourism industry?

• Majority of the tourist attractions don’t look good.

• Some of the destination hosts don’t invest back into tourism sites.

• I think our beautiful religious buildings should be restructured just like tourist attractions such as the Abu Dhabi mosque.

• When renovating popular sites, stakeholders should focus on the facilities instead of ruining the attractions themselves. We’re here to see the real attractions not some weird retouched stuff.

#17. What motto do you live by when travelling?

To travel is to live.

Travelling makes me discover new things, history, culture, meet new people, etc. and this is the essence of life itself.
